ARCHITECTURE

These hypothetical projects were created during studio courses at AU SoA.

Simple Screen

The objective of this project was to make a simple, beautiful model of a wall. On one side, a seat is formed from a simple twist, and horizontal strips step out to form an awning overhead. On the other side, vertical strips of wood undulate to interact with passersby and allow glimpses through the wall.

Thesis Project: Movement

My architecture thesis was devoted to the study of movement. A bookstore, gallery, and café make up the study’s architectural application. This collage features the main stair, connecting the ground level gallery with the café level. Each section of the staircase incorporates seating, making it a place for movement and for rest. The brick was rendered into a photograph of the physical model using Photoshop. Magazine clippings were used for the people and objects.

Chicago Mixed-Use Housing

This project, located in the River North neighborhood of Chicago, consists of fifty-four apartment units. A clothing store, bookstore, and residential lobby make up the ground level. The second level consists of parking and a restaurant that overlooks the El-train. The proposal is designed to keep in-touch with the feel of the surrounding neighborhood without conforming to its neighboring rectilinear buildings. The ground floor is meant to keep the urban edge with the corner firmly anchored. Angled floorplates give relief from standard views of the neighboring buildings and instead provide views towards the skyscrapers of The Loop or down the tracks of the El. Gathering places form where the building pulls back slightly at ground level to create a resting place for pedestrians and where green roofs branch off of the residential lounge floor. The Cor-ten weathered steel cladding connects with the rusted tracks of the El and the color palette of the neighborhood.

Columbus Recycling Center

The image is a spread from my portfolio. In this design proposal, the recycling center becomes public by serving as a pathway between Columbus, Georgia’s downtown and its previously underdeveloped riverfront. The pathway becomes a learning experience, revealing the recycling process to pedestrians. It terminates in a green roof covering a gallery space and overlooking riverfront walking paths.

Mardin Wine & Cheese Shop

While studying in İstanbul, our studio traveled to Mardin, Turkey to visit a site for which we would propose a new function and design. Through minor remodeling and a series of installations, this traditional Turkish house was transformed into a place for showcasing and distributing two products for which the region is famous: wine (şarap) and cheese (peynir).
